Marshall Hall “When I Cry”: Simple Gift Sunday

Marshall Hall When I Cry video and devotion

Get the hanky out. This song pierces my heart and moves me every.single.time.

With my mom’s death on Christmas Eve 2010, my sister’s unexpected death at the age of 53 and the relationship loss of an adopted daughter I know what pain feels like.

I don’t just listen to this song. I weep. I grieve. And I thank God that He has carried me when I couldn’t go on.

There is relief in the tears.  I often feel alone with my pain, but I am never alone when Jesus holds my hand.

Thank you, God, for hope of a better day.

For many of you the holidays only bring reminders of lost relationships and loved ones and the emptiness that often follows.

Please take the time to listen to the truth of this song.

Be moved. Be comforted. Know you are not alone when you cry. This is my Simple Gift to you today.

Makin’ a list of all of the good things you’ve done for me.
Lord, I’ve never been one to complain.
But, right now I’m lost, and I can’t find my way.
My world’s come apart, and it’s breakin’ my heart.
But it helps to know; that your heart is breaking too.

When I cry, You cry. When I hurt, You hurt.
When I’ve lost someone, it takes a piece of You too.
And when I fall on my face, You fill me with grace.
Cause nothing breaks Your heart, or tears You apart
Like when I cry.

Alone in the dark, face in my hands cryin’ out to You.
Lord, there’s never been a time in my life,
There’s so much at stake, there’s so much to lose.
But I trust it to You. You’ll bring me through.
And it helps me to know that I’m not alone.

When I cry, You cry. When I hurt, You hurt.
When I’ve lost someone, it takes a piece of You too.
And when I fall on my face, You fill me with grace.
Cause nothing breaks Your heart, or tears You apart

Like when I cry.

You’re the one who calmed the raging sea.
You’re the one who made the blind to see.
You looked through all of heaven and eternity,
And through it all you saw me.

When I cry, You cry. When I hurt, You hurt.
When I’ve lost someone, it takes a piece of You too.
And when I fall on my face, You fill me with grace.
Nothing breaks Your heart, or tears You apart
Like when I cry.

    • Hi, Helen. I am so happy you were touched by the song and post today. I hadn’t listened to the song in a while either, but it is such a great reminder as we head into the season where loss feels multiplied and lonely. I’m sorry for your own losses and pray today you will know the special warmth of the Savior.
