Do you ever look back in the past and wonder what in the world you were thinking?
Let me explain. Over 20 years ago I was a choir director in our local church. It was the perfect job for me since I have a music degree and love ministering to the church body.
Each Christmas I would a host a party in my home, filled with homemade goodies made by me and decorations that turned my home into a twinkling wonderland.
Obviously I was YOUNGER then and as much as I dearly loved my people I went way overboard. Way, way overboard.
If I could tell my younger self one thing it would be that I didn’t have to work so hard to make a good impression. I also didn’t have to do everything! My choir family loved me for me, not for the free food and pretty home!
Back in the day I also loved making handmade gifts. One year I made a soup mix in a jar recipe and everyone loved it! This year I decided to make an M&M cookie mix in a jar! (And I tested the mix and the cookies are delicious!)
Celebrate the season with a handmade gift straight from your kitchen! This mason jar gift makes a beautiful and tasty treat to give friends and family this Christmas!

Quart jars
Scrapbook paper
Adhesive
Fabric
Ribbon
Twine
2 1/2″ circle punch
Vinyl sticker paper
Christmas spatula (I got mine at Target but these are cute, too!)
Cookie Ingredients
- M&M candies (or chocolate chips, raisins, nuts or any of your favorite cookie flavor)
- all purpose flour
- granulated sugar
- baking soda
- baking powder
Cookie recipe ingredients and details are available in the recipe card.
Step 1. Wash and dry jars.
I buy jars at yard sales when they’re cheap to use for projects such as this. Just make sure there are no chips and run them through the dishwasher for a good cleaning.
Step 2. Print instructions and labels on cardstock and cut out.
If you would prefer to create a sticker for the label I recommend this product.
You can access the free printable with recipe instructions here. The pretty Merry & Bright label is available here.
When you print the labels make sure you select “fit to page” or “scale to fit” so that the labels print full size.
Step 3. Use lid to trace circle onto patterned scrapbook paper.
Step 4. Cut out circle of scrapbook paper or fabric.
Step 5. Glue circle to jar lid.
Step 6. Pour M&M’s into jar with a funnel as the first layer.
If you’d like the M&M’s as a higher layer for the pretty factor just spoon them in carefully as to not disturb the dry ingredients.
A wide mouth quart jar is easiest but using a funnel will do the job as well.
Step 7. Gently pour flour into jar.
Step 8. Press down gently to compress flour layer.
Step 9. Add sugar to jar.
Step 10. Add baking soda and baking powder.
Press lightly as needed on the flour mixture to fit into the jar.
Step 11. Screw on decorative jar lid, add label and attach directions with a ribbon.
This gift would be cute with a Christmas spatula included!

HOW DO I CHANGE THE TEXT ON THE LABELS? I JUST NEED 6 LABELS BUT NEED TO CHANGE THE WORDING.
Hi, Susan. There’s no way to change the text on the labels. Sorry. There are programs out there that are easy to use but this is just a one sheet project. Sorry!
This would make such a fun gift!
I think so, too, Liz. Thanks for sharing!

What a great idea! I love the idea of gifts from the kitchen! A great way to share a treasured recipe with friends and family!
I just love anything in a jar, Maureen! Makes the presentation so cute!
Awesome idea; nothing better than a homemade cookie and handmade gift as far as I’m concerned :)!
I totally agree with you, Sara!
I really love this idea. When I lived in the UK we had a group of friends that did secret Santa every year but the gifts all had to be hand made. This would have been a great gift.
Thanks, Anita! I miss all the traditions that we all used to have. Such a strange year but still one filled with blessings!
