Oreo Dirt Cake is one of the most requested dessert recipes in our family. It’s an easy no-bake dessert that will satisfy your family’s chocolate cravings. Take it to a potluck or gathering with friends and it’ll be a hit! (These Cake Mix Chocolate Chip Bars are another favorite!)
Why is it called Dirt Cake? Dirt Cake is an American invention where crushed Oreos create edible earth or mud. Kids of all ages love anything with Oreos in it and this is a hit whenever it’s served! (Think birthday parties, church potluck, small group gatherings.)

Mini plastic flower pot with saucers (assorted colors)
8″ plastic flower pot
Trifle bowl
9×13 baking dish
Ingredients
- butter
- cream cheese
- powdered sugar
- instant chocolate or regular vanilla pudding
- milk
- whipped topping
- Oreos
See the recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
Crush cookies.
A food processor or blender will work just fine or try putting the Oreos in a plastic bag and crushing with a rolling pin. I’ve even been known to use a Ninja Bullet since I don’t have room in my new cottage for a lot of appliances. The white creme will disappear.
Add butter to large mixing bowl.
Cream cheese comes next.
Finally pour in powdered sugar.
Mix together until well blended.
Add instant pudding mix to bowl.
Pour milk into the cream cheese mixture.
Mix all ingredients thoroughly with a hand mixer.
Fold in whipped cream with the pudding mixture and mix gently.
Layer cream mixture first in serving container.
Sprinkle cookie crumbs on top with a spoon or your fingers.
Kids will love these Oreo crumbs and it’s easier to spread the Oreos evenly around using your fingers.
Repeat layers ending with Oreos on top.
Chill until ready to serve (24 hours if possible).
Serve.
What can you serve it in? Anything goes in my opinion! Try a trifle bowl, a glass 9×13 pan or even a brand new flower pot or bucket for fun. You can also use crystal glasses of any size to dress it up (would be perfect for a tea party!)
FAQs about Oreo Dirt Cake
Tips for Making this Recipe:
- Instead of mixing the butter, cream cheese and powdered sugar in one bowl and the pudding mix, milk and whipped topping in a separate one, I mixed them all in one bow. I’m all about convenience!
- Dirt cake can be made up to two days in advance of your event. Just be sure to wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or tin foil. Leftovers should be placed in an airtight container and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days. (And honestly, it never lasted that long in our family!)

- For a children’s party serve the dirt cake in new mini plastic pails with a shovel and gummy worms inching their way on top! Use M&Ms, toffee bits, chocolate chips or any other candy for “gravel” as a bottom layer or sprinkled on top.

I’ve wended my way here through several other blogs, and am just captivated—started yours with the wonderful china cabinet in your kitchen. The little marks on the side—are they knotty pine coming through, or did you actually distress the wood intentionally. I’ve had a fifties knotty-pine hutch for many years, and have been longing to paint it a pale cream, to house all my scattered-and-packed-away pastel dishes.
I’ve had a can of KILZ for quite some time, in preparation for the day I’d actually get that thing toted upstairs and out in to the open air, and was wondering if you just painted right over the plain wood.
And the Oreo Cake (called Dirt Cake by my kids growing up, as opposed to Ugly Cake, which is the one where you make the batter in the pan, sprinkle on cocoa/sugar, pour on boiling water and bake)—this made me laugh out loud. I scrolled down and scrolled down, enjoying and wishing for some, and then there came other goodies and others, each as tempting as the last, and I heard myself say, as one would to a youngster who just won’t stop—“Will you HUSH?!”
Do forgive me. I got carried away with all the chocolate.

Sorry ‘container of frozen whipped topping’
Hi I’m from Australia – what would be an equivalent to ‘container frozen topping’? Thanks!!
This stuff is great when I first made it. But, dont leave it on the counter
For more than 30 min. it will start tasting like vomit. Not sure if it was the
Cookies or the pudding but I wasted alot of good dessert.
Hi, Amanda. That is great advice about leaving this dessert out! When you have so many dairy products mixed together it’s definitely a good idea to serve it and then immediately refrigerate it again. Thanks for sharing!
This is a classic recipe! Perfect for summer!! And I love your version. Pinning!
This looks wonderful! I know I could eat more than my fair share of this concoction.

Yummm! This was one of my favorite desserts as a kid. We used chocolate pudding, too. And added gummy worms. Thanks for the delicious reminder- I’ll definitely have to make this for my little guys! 🙂

So this is 1/2 stick of butter and not 1/2 cup? Similar recipes call for 1/2 cup, so I’m hesitant. And is a 14 oz pack of Oreos the “large” package? Thanks for your help! I need to make this tonight! Ah!
Oh this looks fab!
Would love for you to link it and your other cake recipes up at my new Empty Your Archive link party which is a chance to dust off great posts from your archive – there is a focus this week on big cakes – would really love to see you there, Alice @ Mums Make Lists x
I Stumbled this post. Yum!
We aren’t dessert eaters, but I do like Oreo cookies. And I have to say, this cake looks and sounds so yummy!!! Thanks for sharing.
Debbie 🙂
